Plan with Confidence

A successful barrier system starts with proper planning. We offer free on-site assessments to help you determine the right solution for your facility. There are three main areas to consider:

  • The Speed

The speed of your material handling equipment directly impacts the force of a potential collision. The faster a vehicle moves, the more kinetic energy it generates, and the higher the level of protection required. Assessing the typical speeds in different zones of your facility allows us to recommend a FlexGuard™ system that is purpose-built to handle that level of impact.

  • Direction of Travel

The angle at which a vehicle is likely to strike a barrier is a crucial factor in safety planning. A vehicle traveling parallel to a barrier presents a different risk than one making a sharp turn or reversing. Understanding these traffic patterns and potential impact angles ensures you install a barrier system that provides the right protection exactly where it’s needed.

  • The Weight

The weight of your vehicles and the loads they carry is a fundamental factor in determining the necessary level of impact resistance. A heavier vehicle will generate significantly more kinetic energy upon impact than a lighter one. Our on-site assessments help you accurately calculate the potential impact forces to ensure you install a barrier that provides reliable, long-term protection.

FAQs

What is a Polymer Barrier and how is it different from other physical barriers?

Flexible barriers (like polymer) absorb force; rigid barriers (like steel) resist it. Each has its place – flexible systems help reduce damage upon impact, while rigid ones provide strong containment in static zones. Our FlexGuard™ Polymer barriers are made from high-performance, impact-absorbing blended polymers across 3 distinct layers; designed to flex upon impact and return close to its original shape. Polymer barriers absorb energy and reduce damage to both the barrier and the vehicle or asset that collides with it.

How does FlexGuard™ absorb impact energy?

When a forklift collides with an object, its motion doesn’t just stop – it transfers its movement energy, known as kinetic energy, to whatever it hits. To bring the forklift to a stop, that object has to resist it over a certain distance. A more flexible traffic barrier, like FlexGuard™, slows the forklift, or other material handling equipment, down over a longer distance, reducing the intensity of the impact.

Where are Polymer Barriers typically used?

They are ideal for high-traffic environments where you need pedestrian protection, vehicle segregation, or asset protection such as warehouses, logistic centres, distribution hubs, non-contact food and beverage manufacturing and airports. Direct UV areas are not recommended. Please note that our polymer barrier systems are designed for use at ground level only

Are polymer Barriers as strong as steel?

They are strong in a different way. At Barrier Group, we understand that no single safety solution fits every application; that’s why we offer a range of purpose-built barrier systems – giving you the flexibility to choose the right protection for your environment.

Is FlexGuard™ impact–tested?

Yes, our FlexGuard™ Bollard, Triple Railing, and Floor Guard systems have all undergone rigorous impact testing to meet the durability demands of industrial environments. For detailed performance data, please refer to the individual product specifications and test results. For more information, please contact a Barrier Group Account Manager.

Can I use FlexGuard™ alongside an existing steel barrier system?

Absolutely! Steel and Polymer barriers can be used together effectively. In fact, many facilities take a hybrid approach to get the best of both materials.

For high-risk zones such as where heavy machinery operates, FlexGuard™ Triple Railing can be paired with machinery guarding to provide enhanced protection. In other applications, FlexGuard™ Floor Guard can be installed alongside steel guardrails such as our W-Beam, Ball Fence, or No-Weld systems to deliver superior low-level impact protection.

By using each material where it performs best, we can improve safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness across the site.

Our expert team can assess your current site layout and provide tailored recommendations on how FlexGuard™ Polymer Barriers can be effectively integrated into your safety strategy.

Is FlexGuard™ suitable for external/outside environments?

Yes, FlexGuard™ is suitable for external use in non-direct UV exposure areas. Suitable external environments include undercover car parks and pedestrian walkways, and sheltered loading docks and vehicle zones.

Is the FlexGuard™ system suitable for multi-level facilities, mezzanines or heights above 1m?

Our system is designed specifically for ground-level use only.

Can I customise the length of my FlexGuard™ railing?

Yes, the FlexGuard™ Triple Railing has been designed for ease of specification and can be customised to suit your specific application needs. FlexGuard™ Triple Railing can be specified in standard 2-metre sections with suitable thru and end-posts to accommodate your total run. In cases where you require a railing section that is less than 2-metres, it can be cut down to size. For more information, please reach out to a Barrier Group Account Manager.

Is the FlexGuard™ system available in colours other than black and yellow?

The use of yellow and black is recommended by PAS13 to indicate caution and ensure pedestrian segregation.

Can we relocate barriers later if our layout changes?

Yes, our FlexGuard™ system is modular and designed with flexibility in mind.

How do I know what type of FlexGuard™ barrier I need?

We offer free on-site assessments. Whether you need pedestrian guidance, vehicle segregation, or asset protection, our expert team can tailor a solution based on your traffic flow, space constraints, and safety goals. When selecting FlexGuard™ or other polymer barrier products, it’s essential to assess your work environment, traffic flow, and the level of impact resistance required.

To determine the suitable product for your application, consider the following:

The speed;

  • Material handling equipment (MHE) on some sites will be speed-limited.

The direction of travel and potential impact angles;

  • Base your barrier selection on the likely angles of impact.

  • The larger the angle, the higher the potential impact energy. For example: Is it mainly parallel to the barrier? Are they reversing or turning near the barrier?

The mass (vehicle’s type and weight + load)

Can we relocate barriers later if our layout changes?

Yes, our FlexGuard™ system is modular and designed with flexibility in mind.

Are there any considerations for installation and planning?

For installation and planning, you must consider the Deflection Zone. PAS 13 refers to a Deflection Zone (also known as a Safe Zone) as an area directly behind a safety barrier that allows it to flex or absorb impact energy without endangering people or damaging equipment.

This zone is essential for maintaining the effectiveness of the barrier system and preventing the transfer of impact forces to protected areas.

The size of the deflection zone depends on the barrier type and expected impact force, and it must be kept free of obstructions, such as personnel, workstations, or stored goods.

For more information contact a Barrier Group Account Manager or arrange a free on-site assessment.

What happens if I need to replace a FlexGuard™ triple railing post or railing section?

The FlexGuard™ range has been designed for ease of specification and triple railing posts and railing sections can be easily replaced thanks to its modular repairability. No welding or specialist tools are needed, simply switch out the damaged parts with new ones and continue operations.

What is the lead time for the FlexGuard™ range?

At Barrier Group we understand that keeping your poeple safe and operations running smoothly is critical, which is why speed matters! Thanks to the systems modularity, it is easy to install, which keeps installation times short and disruption minimal. We keep core product lines in stock locally and can typically dispatch within 1-3 days. For more information, please reach out to a Barrier Group Account Manager.

Is the FlexGuard™ range chemical resistant?

Polypropylene (PP) generally offers good chemical resistance, especially to non-oxidising acids, bases, fats, and many organic solvents.

However, it is not suitable for use with strong oxidisers such as concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid, or halogens (e.g., chlorine and bromine). Its resistance can also vary depending on factors like chemical concentration, temperature, and exposure time.

For safety-critical applications, such as chemical storage, always consult official chemical compatibility charts. For more information, please get in contact with a Barrier Group Account Manager.

Is FlexGuard™ polymer corrosion resistant?

While the polymer material itself is resistant to rust, the base and fixings are made of steel, which can corrode if exposed to chemicals or humid environments.

How do I maintain my FlexGuard™ Barrier Systems?

  • Cleaning: regularly clean the product’s surface to prevent damage from stains, dust, etc. Use a soft, dry towel and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives.

  • Periodic Checking: regularly inspect the safety barriers, focusing on bolts, connecting parts, and end posts. For products with signs of impact, ensure that all parts are securely connected. Address any damage or looseness promptly.

  • Fixtures Checking: tighten all fittings and fixtures properly before using them. Check all fittings and fixtures regularly and retighten them as necessary. Use a torque wrench to the appropriate setting: M10 bolts at 50Nm, M12 bolts at 80Nm.
