The Problem
Mondelēz International invested in a new 47,000-square-metre manufacturing facility in Triganina, Melbourne, with the capacity to process over 450 million products annually. This reflects an increase of over 60 per cent compared to its previous capacity. The new Melbourne facility is the company's most high-tech facility in the world, featuring 28 recessed docks, 12 on-grade docks, a 25-metre super canopy, a 5,000-square-metre low bay expansion area, and accommodating up to 150 vehicle movements per day.
In light of this major investment in infrastructure, technology, and the addition of 200 new staff for warehousing, co-packing, and manufacturing, Mondelēz International required a comprehensive safety solution to safeguard its valuable assets and protect employees from moving vehicles and machinery.
The Solution
The decision was made to install Barrier Group's Mesh Panel Industrial Safety Fencing in the dispatch and staging areas, as well as in zones where Conveyors and Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) tracks are operational. This measure not only helps ensure compliance with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations but also creates a high-speed, automated, and controlled environment where equipment and personnel are physically separated. This separation reduces injury risks and minimises downtime. Using Industrial Safety Fencing Mesh Panelling instead of a permanent safety barrier offers the added benefit of flexibility, enabling Mondelēz International to easily reconfigure their layout as they grow within the facility.
Furthermore, foam-filled column cushions were supplied to complement Mondelēz International's new facility, aiming to protect structural columns and enhance operational efficiency. The steel columns within facilities such as Mondelēz International are essential load-bearing components, and inadvertent impacts from forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment that have the potential to cause significant structural damage and safety hazards.
The Challenges
The inauguration of Mondelēz International’s new Truganina facility signifies a notable milestone for both the corporation and the Australian manufacturing industry. The safety solutions implemented by Barrier Group have established a controlled and secure operational environment from the outset, enabling employees to execute their duties effectively while safeguarding them from moving vehicles, machinery, and other operational risks.
