The Problem
As attendance continues to reach record levels, event organisers at the Australian Open faced a growing operational challenge: maintaining safe, efficient pedestrian movement at scale. Managing tens of thousands of patrons in Melbourne’s summer conditions requires precision, particularly across high-traffic pinch points such as venue entries and exits, amenities, restricted access zones (VIP, media, and player-only areas), and constantly shifting crowd flows.
The Australian Open is a dynamic event. Movement patterns change rapidly as spectators migrate between courts, precincts, and activations throughout the day. Static crowd control solutions were no longer sufficient.
The Solution
In collaboration with Barrier Group, event organisers chose the Neata Single Portable Belt Post Barriers as the most practical and adaptable solution for this environment. The 3-metre black belt was chosen for its premium, architectural appearance, while the integrated braking system and self-locking clip provide controlled retraction and minimise the risk of belt snap-back or snagging in high-use areas.
The result is a series of clearly defined pedestrian pathways that offer high operational flexibility. The solution enables event teams to respond quickly to changing crowd conditions while maintaining a clean, consistent aesthetic—supporting safer movement, improved flow, and confident crowd management across one of Australia’s most complex live event environments.
