Avalon Airport
Avalon Airport, situated outside Geelong, Victoria, is recognised as the second busiest airport in the state based on passenger traffic. Established in 1953, the airport initially served the production of military aircraft before transitioning to support commercial aviation and pilot training programs.
Additionally, Avalon Airport is the venue for the annual Australian International Airshow, a prominent event that ranks among the largest airshows in the Southern Hemisphere.
In addition to serving as a passenger hub, Avalon Airport functions as a transport and logistics hub, significantly contributing to the local economy as a major employer. Approximately 2,500 individuals work on-site daily (Geelong TImes).
With safety as its highest priority, Avalon required a trusted and experienced industrial safety provider to support its growing operations. Barrier Group was engaged to design an asset protection system for the Airport’s new freight processing facility.

The Problem
Avalon Airport necessitated a guardrail system designed to support its traffic management plan, which aims to segregate pedestrian pathways from vehicular traffic within its newly established freight processing facility. This facility is anticipated to handle an annual volume of 100,000 tonnes of freight; thus, the guardrail system must be sufficiently resilient to endure the specific environmental conditions present in both the entrance, depot, and ambient rooms of the facility.
The Solution
Before the installation process commenced at Avalon Airport, an on-site assessment was conducted to ascertain the specific safety requirements. This initial site assessment plays a critical role in the project, as it enables us, in conjunction with the client, to identify the necessary safety specifications while considering any required alterations and modifications.
Key Products Implemented:
-
W-Beam Guardrail:
The Heavy-Duty W-Beam Guardrail is meticulously designed to enhance asset protection and ensure pedestrian safety. This adaptable system is specifically intended for industrial facilities, parking areas, and non-highway environments; providing essential asset protection for Avalon Airport while safeguarding pedestrians from slow-moving vehicles in the vicinity of the new cargo processing facility.
-
Heavy-Duty Round Bollards:
The Heavy-Duty Surface Mounted Bollards provide exceptional asset protection by preventing unauthorised vehicle access to the cargo facility's coolroom, as well as safeguarding the vehicle entrances outside the hangar. With a diameter of 165 mm and constructed from durable steel, these bollards are specifically engineered to withstand contact with vehicles in proximity.
-
Ball-Fence Industrial Swing Gate:
The Ball-Fence Swing Gates will facilitate entry and exit for pedestrians, ensuring safe access points. Commonly utilised in pedestrian walkways, warehouses, car parks, and other restricted areas, these gates can be customised to size based on specific application requirements.
The Challenges
Given the extensive ongoing works at the site being completed in stages, the project was broken up into stages.
To address this consideration, the installation schedule had to be flexible to allow for any ad-hoc adjustments. We collaborated closely with Avalon Airport to implement a staged approach to the installation schedule; prioritising the interior and exterior works of the coolroom within the cargo processing facility first and scheduling the exterior work at a later date when the concrete had been laid.
Client Response
Barrier Group's heavy-duty guardrails, bollards, and ball-fence swing gates collectively provide a comprehensive turn-key safety solution designed to enhance Avalon's existing traffic management plan and meet its specific operational requirements.
Despite the challenges faced during the installation process, our adaptable, stage-based approach ensured minimal disruption and maximum effectiveness.
Barrier Group takes pride in its contribution to Avalon Airport's sustained growth and its essential role as a significant economic driver for the Geelong region.
